Interpretation: This painting takes us on a voyage through the history of Malaysia starting from the British colonisation in the 1700’s. The Federated Malay States was formed under British rule in 1895. During World War II, the Japanese invaded the country from 1942 to 1945. In 1946 after the war, the country sought independence from Britain and formed the United Malay National Organisation (UMNO). Under the leadership of Tunku Abdul Rahman, the Federation of Malaya gained independence in 1957. This event gave him the title of “Bapa Kemerdekaan” (Father of Independence). The country’s name was changed to Malaysia after Sabah and Sarawak joined the country in 1963. After Singapore left Malaysia in 1965, the Federal Territory of Malaysia was formed, consisting of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya. The different Prime Ministers up to 2020 are illustrated in the painting with each of their unique visions for the country.
