Frozen II in Malaysia, Series 1 • Acrylic on canvas • 42cm (H) x 59.5 cm (W) • 2019 • by artjamila

Interpretation: The inspiration for this painting comes from the Frozen II screening in Malaysia. This painting is meant to symbolise the preservation of the values, cultural heritage, and traditions of Malaysia while embracing the influence of external culture. The three girls at the bottom of the painting are meant to represent the character Elsa in traditional Malaysian clothing (Kadazan, Iban, and Chinese clothing) who are showing off their power. However, Elsa’s ice powers are depicted to look like Malaysian flags coming out in swarms out of the girls’ palms. The characters Kristoff, Anna, Elsa, and Hans are drawn wearing Malaysian clothing as well (Malay, Indian, and Chinese clothing) with their figures painted in a way to match with their Malaysian costumes.
